With the support of Margaret Sanger, an International Congress on Population and World Resources in Relation to the Family was held in England in 1948, and the language of ‘crisis’ and ‘catastrophe’ in relation to finding food for the rising population was freely used.4 1948 also saw the publication of two books in the United States which were to play a major role in convincing people that the threat of overpopulation had to be taken very seriously: Fairfield Osborn’s Our Plundered Planet, and William Vogt’s Road to Survival.
